As global competition for AI technology supremacy intensifies beyond generative AI to physical AI, the Korea Physical AI Association has officially launched. The association plans to establish a foundation for leaping forward as a global leader in physical AI through public-private cooperation. This is reporter Lim Hae-jeong reporting.

The Korea Physical AI Association, with participation from major domestic AI companies and research institutions, has officially launched. 

Launched under private initiative, the association is set to propose policies, standardize technology, and build a demand ecosystem to enhance the competitiveness of the physical AI industry.

Centered around a total of 19 subcommittees, the association plans to set policy directions and discuss technology development plans suited to domestic industry characteristics.

"The first key to making a leap to become one of the top 3 AI nations was physical AI. I believe physical AI is a powerful weapon that can dramatically improve our industrial competitiveness and change the quality of life for our people. The association presented 4 key tasks to foster the domestic physical AI ecosystem.

In particular, it spotlighted the need for an institutional foundation to ensure domestic companies can gain competitiveness in the field of physical AI where international standards have not yet been established.

Industry-specific physical AI application cases and plans for establishing an integrated physical AI center were also discussed.

Korea Physical AI Association President Yoo Tae-jun emphasized that with national strategy and industry-academia-research cooperation in place, the association will focus on advancing physical AI technology and establishing standards.

"The National AI Strategy Committee will serve as the overall control tower, and an organization called the Physical AI Global Alliance has been formed to handle industry-academia-research cooperation, providing a framework. Therefore, the association will focus more sharply on advancing the Vision Language Action Model (VLA) related to physical AI technology, creating datasets, and establishing various standards to secure demonstration spaces."

The association plans to expand participating companies and institutions by the end of the year and support the growth of startups and SMEs through an open test infrastructure.
